“Who is the strongest player in the world?”
There are world championships and world ratings in chess or other
sport/boards games, but the situation in the world of Go is
completely different. There are lots of tournaments, adding the word
“world” to their names, such as LG World Go Championship, Fujitsu
World Go Championship, Samsung World Go Championship and many others.
They have professional rating lists in Korea and China, but did not
create the united world-rating list. So, it’s always difficult to
answer the question “Who is the strongest Go player in the world?”
Here we will share with you the opinions of top Go players to make
the situation clear. We think, you will be able to answer the main
question after reading these impressions.
We found these opinions mainly from private interviews; the dates of
interviews are in brackets.

1. Cho Chikun, (2003): 1. Lee Changho 2. Lee Sedol 3. Park
Yeonghun
2. Xie He, (2003): Cho Hunnyun, Lee Changho, Lee Sedol in Korea,
Top Chinese masters are not much weaker: Chang Hao, Wang Lei, Zhou
Heyang, Gu Li, Kong Jie, Hu Yaoyu, Yu Bin and others
3. Park Chonsang, (2006):1-3: Lee Changho, Lee Sedol, Gu Li 4-8:
Choi Cheolhan, Park Yeonghun, Yoda Norimoto, Cho U and Kong Jie
4. Lee Sedol, (2005): Lee Changho and Choi Cheolhan from Korea,
Gu Li, Kong Jie, Chang Hao and Hu Yaoyu from China
5.Gu Li, (2006): Lee Changho, Lee Sedol, Choi Cheolhan and Park
Yeonghun from Korea; Cho U and Yoda Norimoto - from Japan. It is hard
to say about Chinese masters. I am around #10
6.Park Yeonghun, (2004): 1.Lee Changho 2. Lee Sedol 3. Choi
Cheolhan.
Park Yeonghun, 9-dan also told us that his own position must be near
the 10th place
7. Yoda Norimoto, (2006): Korean players are still strongest in
the world

To make the subject even clearer we decided to put the recent Korean
and Chinese rating lists:

Chinese pro ranks, May, 2006:

1 Gu Li, 9-dan 2,728
2 Zhou Heyang, 9-dan 2,690
3 Xie He, 6-dan 2,663
4 Kong Jie, 7-dan 2,660
5 Wang Xi, 9-dan 2,643
6 Hu Yaoyu, 8-dan 2,635
7 Zhou Ruiyang, 4-dan 2,626
8 Chang Hao, 9-dan 2,624

World Go News and upcoming pro events

1. Rui Naiwei, 9-dan, the strongest woman in the world will not join
the Chinese team during the 5th Jeongganjang Women Go Championship.
The main reason – they asked her to play the qualification
competition first.
Other top Chinese such as Hua Xueming, 7-dan and Zhang Xuan, 8-dan
(Chang Hao’s wife) will not take part too. The reasons are
different:
Hua Xueming, 7-dan: “I decided to skip the tournament, giving more
chances for younger players”
Zhang Xuan, 8-dan: “ My daughter will enter the school soon and I
cannot leave her alone”
It seems, that it will be difficult for Chinese team to win the
tournament this time ( they were the winners of the 4th Jeongganjang
cup ).

2. The first round of the 11th Samsung World Go Championship will
start on September, 6. The players are:

Korea: Lee Changho(9d, runner-up), Choi Cheolhan(9d, best-4), Cho
Hunhyun(9d), Yoo Changhyuk(9d), Lee Sedol(9d),Seo Bongsoo(9d, wild
card), Park Yeonghun(9d), Park Jungsang(9d), Ko Geuntae(5d), Cho
Hanseung(9d), Rui Naiwei(9d, female qualification winner), An
Dalhun(7d), Kang Dongyun(5d), Paek Hongsuk(4d), Yun Junsang(4d), Kim
Hyeongwoo(1d), Bae Junhee(1d)
China: Luo Xihe(9d, winner), Hu Yaoyu(8d, best-4), Chang Hao(9d), Gu
Li(9d),
Yu Bin(9d), Zhou Heyang(9d), Wang Yao(6d), Piao Wenyao(5d), Chen
Yaoye(5d), Zhang Wei(5d), Fan Yijing(1d, female qualification
winner)
Japan: Cho Chikun(9d), Yamashita Keigo(9d), Kono Rin(8d), Kim
Sujun(7d)

It’s a pity to see, that Japanese team is not so large and strong
this time.

As usual, commented and uncommented games from the tournament will be
available on http://www.go4go.net/v2/
