Yoo Changhyuk's Baduk(Go) School
Translated by A. Dinerchtein, under the permission of Korean “Baduk World” magazine
May, 2004

Yoo Changhyuk, 9-dan (A.D. One of the strongest Korean players in mid 90’s) opened the children Go school in April, 2004 together with his best friend and another 9-dan Choi Kyubyeong. This school was not their first one. They created it instead of the Go club for young professional players, which was very successful during 16(!) years
We decided to visit their Go school and ask the impressions of the owners.
The Go school is divided into several small rooms, and looks like a big hostel floor. We can enter the first room and see 4 professionals: Park Yeonghun, 5-dan, (A.D. He is 9-dan now), Lee Jungwoo, 4-dan, Kim Eunseon and Kim Sesil (both female, both 1-dan). Choi Kyubyeong, 9-dan was Park’s main teacher, than Park was an amateur. It seems, that Park is already stronger now.
Right now there are only 7 students. They are young and talented. "We have some genius child, but the other Go clubs have them too. Everything will depend of their efforts and it’s hard to say, can they reach the pro level or not", said Choi Kyubyeong, 9-dan.
The Go school is opened from 8 AM to 10 PM. Yoo Changhyuk, 9-dan is always staying with his students, except the days, than he has tournaments himself.
We asked him: "How are you teaching them?"
He explained as: "They can easily learn openings, josekis and study life&death problems from Go books, so I am trying to create the self-learning atmosphere in our Go school. The main thing I do myself is replaying and commenting their games. Many of my students are really good at reading, and even high-level professionals cannot make them stronger in solving life&death problems, but we can teach them lot of other things."
Some people think, that it’s a bit early for Yoo Changhyuk, 9-dan to teach children, because they trust, that he is still able to show good results himself on professional scene. Yoo Changhyuk, 9-dan explained us his decision: "It is true, that I am still playing Go seriously, but I cannot always stay on the top. I thought a lot about my future life and decided , that I will enjoy Go teaching more than any other job. My dream is to find a student, who can enter the elite of Korean Go."
Yoo, 9-dan also said us few words about his students:
"Somebody said, that we are taking only inseis of Korean Baduk Association, but it’s not true. We prefer to teach really young children, even they are not as strong as inseis. I think, it’s not so honest to invite the strong students from other clubs and teachers and in such cases we always ask them to take the permissions from their old studying places.
We did not made our school for making money, so we are trying to keep the moral rules. If we see, that the child has not enough talent to become a professional, we prefer to contact his parents and ask them to find him another future goal. I believe, than in some cases it’s better to find another road, continue playing Go as a hobby."
Finally we ask Yoo, 9-dan about the situation on the modern Go scene.
"Japanese masters are far behind, Chinese are trying to reach our level, but it’s not so easy. They have a huge country and it’s hard to create such a high-level learning system as we have in Korea. Few times they called us and suggest to accept some students from China, but we refused to take them, mainly because of language problems", - mentioned Yoo Changhyuk, 9-dan.
Yoo Changhyuk, 9-dan and Choi Kyubyeong, 9-dan are the great teachers and we will see how they can change the situation in the modern world of Go.

Quiz results
"In his recent interview Cho Hunhyun, 9-dan called him the most genius players of all times and nations. What is his name?"
We got a lot of correct answers, but Ze-Li Dou was the first one. He will get a 6 months subscription to Commented games section on Go4Go : http://www.go4go.net/v2/modules/alex/
The right answer:
Cho Hunhyun, 9-dan said: "Go Seigen, 9-dan is the most genius master in Go history. Lee Changho and me are much behind him"

World Go news
1. Takemiya, 9-dan lost the challenger-decision game of the 32nd Japanese Tengen tournament to Yamashita, 9-dan. You can see this game commented by Alexander Dinerchtein, 1-dan professional at the attachment.

2. You may know, that there are lots of Taiwanese-born professionals, currently living in Japan. The most famous of them are Rin Kaiho, Cho U, O Rissei and O Meien. We will probably see another Taiwanese star in near future. His name is Ko Iso. He was born in 1987 and reached 7-dan in 2006. He got a huge promotion from 4-dan, for becoming the member of Meijin league (He broke Yoda's record, by entering the league at only 18 years and 6 months old). Few days ago Ko, 7-dan won the first game of the Japanese Shinjin O final against Matsumoto Takehisa, who is one of Cho Chikun's students (the record is here: http://www.go4go.net/v2/modules/collection/sgfview.php?id=12501 ) He also showed an excellent results in the 11th LG cup, by beating Kong Jie, 7-dan from China and winning the preliminary tournament. Remember his name please! You will hear it again in near future! By the way, you can find 31 games of Ko Iso, 7-dan in Go4Go database.

3. 8th Nongshim Cup. You may see, that the decision of the Korean Go Association to give the wild card to Cho Hunhyun, 9-dan, instead of Lee Sedol, 9-dan was wrong. Cho, 9-dan lost his game to Hane Naoki, 9-dan (Japan). You may know, that the score between Hane and Lee Sedol is 0-8, but unfortunately, Lee is not the member of the Korean team.
